If you're a BMW owner looking to keep your vehicle running smoothly, the bimmer-tool application offers a comprehensive solution for reading and clearing fault codes, as well as checking and managing your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This powerful tool can request DPF regeneration, read engine live data, and much more, ensuring that your BMW performs at its best.
For BMW models manufactured before 2008, the functionality of the application may be limited. In these cases, using a K+DCan USB cable connection is recommended to ensure optimal performance. Wireless ELM adapter connections with these older models might not be possible or may not support all functions.
To use the bimmer-tool effectively, it's essential to have a reliable OBD adapter. We recommend the following options:
- K+DCan cable
- ENET adapter (for F/G series)
- Bluetooth adapters such as Vgate vLinker MC/FS/BM/FD, UniCarScan UCSI-2000/USCI-2100, Carista, or Veepeak OBDCheck BLE
The bimmer-tool application enables you to:
- Read DPF regeneration status and detailed information
- Request DPF regeneration
- Reset DPF adaptation values after filter replacement
- Read exhaust fumes pressure
- Read injectors adjustments
- Read actual and expected values for air mass, intake manifold pressure, and fuel pressure
- Log data to a CSV file for further analysis
- Register battery replacement without changing battery properties
- Reset lamps circuits blocked due to short-circuit errors
- Reset oil/brakes service and change interval
Supported OBD adapters include:
- K+D-Can USB: The most reliable and recommended adapter, requiring a USB-OTG cable.
- ENET cable/WiFi Adapter: Recommended for F & G series, with an additional USB-C to Ethernet adapter needed.
- ELM327 Bluetooth: May be slower than USB; only genuine ELM327 or PIC18-based adapters are supported. May not work with older engines.
- ELM327 WiFi: May be less stable; mobile data transmission might need to be disabled for use.
To get started with bimmer-tool, follow these steps:
- Connect the adapter to the OBD II socket.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Connect the adapter to your phone using the appropriate method (USB, Bluetooth, or WiFi).
- Start the app, go to 'Car', and choose the model and year.
- Go to 'Connection' and select the connection type, adapter type, and communication protocol.
- Tap the 'Connect' button.
For models before 2008 and specific models like e46/e39/e83/e53, a K+DCan cable connection is required, and only the engine ECU is supported. Wireless ELM adapters might not work with these vehicles.
If you encounter common problems like 'No response' errors in cars up to 2007 with Bluetooth/WiFi adapters, try selecting the ATWM option under advanced connection settings. If the app cannot connect despite correct settings, force stop all diagnostic applications or restart your phone and try again.
The bimmer-tool app requires certain permissions to function correctly:
- Storage: For USB adapter support
- Photos / Media / Files: To create CSV files
- Pair with Bluetooth devices/access Bluetooth settings: For Bluetooth adapter support
- Full network access: For WiFi adapter support
- Approximate location: Though theoretically possible, the app does not read or use location data
