Gaming Giant Unveils Innovation in Team-Based Combat

by Liam Dec 30,2024

Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize tag-team fighting games. This article explores its innovative features and the recently concluded playable demo.

Redefining Tag-Team Combat:

2XKO's Innovative Tag-Team Mechanics

2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, introduces "Duo Play," a unique twist on the 2v2 format. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This allows for thrilling four-player matches (2v2) and even 2v1 showdowns. Within each team, one player is the "Point" and the other the "Assist," interacting through three key mechanics:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: Point and Assist characters instantly swap roles.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist can interrupt enemy combos.

Unlike some tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both team members to be defeated. Even defeated champions can still act as Assists. Matches are designed to be longer and more strategic.

Strategic Synergies with "Fuses":

2XKO's Character Selection Screen

Beyond choosing character colors, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—synergy options that alter team playstyles. The demo featured five:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks trigger devastating combos.
  • FURY: Below 40% health, increased damage and special dash cancels.
  • FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
  • 2X ASSIST: Grants the Assist more actions.

Game designer Daniel Maniago described the Fuse system as a way to "amplify player expression" and create powerful combos for well-coordinated duos.

Champion Roster and Alpha Playtest:

2XKO's Diverse Champion Lineup

The demo featured six playable champions (Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi), each with movesets reflecting their League of Legends counterparts. While Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19), their inclusion is planned for the future. 2XKO, a free-to-play title, launches on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025. Registration for the Alpha Lab Playtest is currently open. Learn more and register via the link provided in the original article!
