In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal decision: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or let the Emperor handle him. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, profoundly impacts the game's conclusion.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate. This decision carries significant weight; companions might sacrifice themselves, demanding high skill checks (potentially needing a 30 roll) to influence their actions.
Spoiler Warning: The following details the game's ending.
Should You Free Orpheus?
This decision hinges on player preference. Early in Act 3, the Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers). After the Netherbrain battle, within the Astral Prism, the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.
Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is sacrificed, his knowledge absorbed. Lae'zel and Karlach might object, impacting their personal quests. This secures victory over the Netherbrain but might displease players invested in these characters.
Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight, and if asked, will willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people.
In short: choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation; free Orpheus to risk it. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.
Moral Considerations:
The "good" choice depends on individual perspectives, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him, while others might find Voss and Lae'zel's demands excessive. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if influencing the wider world.
The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan risks Mind Flayer transformation, but results in a morally upright (if tentacled) outcome. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can lead to favorable outcomes for everyone.
