More Opportunity for Surprise
Renowned for its deep weapon manufacturing mechanics, the Borderlands franchise sees developer Gearbox expand this core feature in Borderlands 4. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Executive Producer Chris Brock highlighted that while the previous installment’s system was impressive, Borderlands 4 introduces even greater variety and customization options.
"The way we've done guns before is great, but with the way we're doing it now there's more opportunity for surprise," Brock explained. He also pointed out a new "licensed parts" feature, which allows components from one manufacturer to appear in weapons from another, adding unexpected twists to loot.
Borderlands’ iconic weapon system relies on distinct brands, each defined by unique traits and mechanics, helping players quickly identify gear within the looter-shooter genre.
Three new manufacturers join the roster: Order, Ripper, and Daedalus. Returning favorites include Jakobs, Maliwan, Tediore, Torque, and Vladof. Meanwhile, COV and Hyperion have been removed from the lineup, as their leaders were defeated in the previous game’s storyline.
Recognizing that Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands featured over one billion guns combined, Gearbox prioritizes expanding its arsenal further. On February 1, Senior Project Producer Anthony Nicholson told GamesRadar+ about the studio's dedication to this aspect of development.
Nicholson noted that Gearbox is "always adding more guns, manufacturers, legendary weapons and opportunities for customization and player expression." He added, "Borderlands 4 will feature billions of weapons and accessories for players to acquire."
Free Hazard Pay Weapon Skin
To further excite fans, Borderlands 4 is offering a complimentary weapon skin prior to launch. Gearbox announced via Steam on June 28 that players who subscribe to SHiFT newsletter and digital marketing emails will receive the Hazard Pay Weapon Skin.
After subscribing, users must link their SHiFT account to their gaming platform of choice. Upon release, logging into Borderlands 4 with this linked SHiFT account will unlock the skin. Additionally, promotional emails sent by Borderlands may contain special SHiFT codes for extra rewards.
Despite recent discussions surrounding pricing comments from Gearbox’s CEO, development momentum remains strong with new features like a post-launch photo mode and a fresh comedic tone that complements the game's serious narrative.
