EB Games has put forward a plan to shut down all its remaining retail outlets across New Zealand, alongside its local distribution hub, as reported by The New Zealand Herald.
This proposal was outlined in an internal letter addressed to staff members, clarifying that “[t]his suggestion is not yet final and no firm decision will be taken until a thorough consultation process with affected team members has been completed in good faith.”
Despite this caveat, the correspondence confirmed that should the plan move forward, every employment position within EB Games New Zealand will be eliminated. The exact number of job losses resulting from this closure has not yet been disclosed. Staff have been given until January 12 to provide their feedback on the proposed shutdown.
EB Games’ combined Australian and New Zealand operations encompass a total of 374 stores, with 38 locations situated in New Zealand. The brand is still owned by US video game retailer GameStop, which purchased the EB Games business during the mid-2000s. Although EB Games outlets in the United States were rebranded as GameStop, retail locations in Australia and New Zealand have continued to operate under the original EB Games name.
