Capcom's Commitment to Reviving Classic IPs
Capcom has announced a renewed focus on reviving its classic intellectual properties (IPs), beginning with the highly anticipated returns of Okami and Onimusha. This strategy aims to deliver high-quality content to fans and leverage Capcom's extensive game library.
Okami and Onimusha Lead the Charge
A December 13th press release confirmed Capcom's dedication to this initiative. A new Onimusha title, set in Edo-period Kyoto, is scheduled for release in 2026. A new Okami sequel is also in development, with the original game's directors and development team returning. The release date for the Okami sequel remains undisclosed.
Capcom explicitly stated its intention to "re-activate dormant IPs," prioritizing the creation of "highly efficient, high-quality titles." This commitment complements their ongoing projects, including Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both slated for a 2025 release. This strategy doesn't preclude new IP development, as evidenced by recent releases like Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.
Fan Input Shapes the Future
Capcom's February 2024 "Super Election" provided valuable fan feedback, revealing highly sought-after sequels and remakes. Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire emerged as top contenders. The significant dormancy of these franchises—with their last installments released between 1997 and 2003, and Breath of Fire 6 having a short lifespan—makes them prime candidates for revitalization.
While Capcom hasn't explicitly revealed its future plans beyond Okami and Onimusha, the results of the "Super Election" strongly suggest that these fan-favorite dormant IPs are likely to receive attention in the coming years. The inclusion of Onimusha and Okami in the voting further reinforces this direction.
