Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3
Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a significant leap into virtual reality (VR) this spring, exclusively launching on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This marks the franchise's debut in the VR/mixed reality space.
Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Comments
2K Games and Firaxis Games announced the VR version during the Civ World Summit on February 8th, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed excitement about bringing the strategic gameplay to a new audience. Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the timing of the release, coinciding with the launch of the Meta Quest 3S and a strong games portfolio. He emphasized Civ VII VR as a genuine Civilization experience tailored for dedicated strategy players. Note that, despite the game's release on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.
Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options
Civ VII VR immerses players in a detailed "Command Table" environment, allowing them to zoom in and out for strategic planning. The game supports both VR and mixed reality modes, with customizable views in each. Players can choose between single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, with up to four players able to engage simultaneously using Meta Quest headsets. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K and Meta account.
Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates
Firaxis Games acknowledged player feedback from the early access period (available since February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Edition owners). They've committed to significant UI improvements to enhance usability and map readability, addressing concerns raised on Steam. Future updates will also incorporate community-requested features, such as team-based multiplayer and additional map types. A quality-of-life update is planned for March, focusing on UI refinements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.
Release Information
Civilization VII VR is slated for release in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a precise date yet to be announced.
