Michael Sarnoski, the director behind A Quiet Place: Day One, is reportedly set to write and direct the live-action adaptation of Kojima Productions' Death Stranding.
According to Deadline, Sarnoski will take the helm as both writer and director for the film adaptation. The project is being produced by A24, Kojima Productions, and Square Peg. Known for his work on A Quiet Place: Day One and the critically acclaimed 2021 film Pig, starring Nicolas Cage, Sarnoski is also currently working on another A24 production, The Death of Robin Hood.
Details surrounding the live-action adaptation remain scarce at this time. Originally released in 2019, Death Stranding placed players into a desolate, post-apocalyptic America, where they embarked on a mission to reconnect isolated communities amid a global extinction-level crisis. The game’s eerie atmosphere, filled with otherworldly creatures and surreal events, already lends itself well to cinematic storytelling—especially considering Hideo Kojima’s signature narrative style.
The original title also boasted a high-profile cast that included Norman Reedus as Sam Bridges, Léa Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley. Whether or not these actors will reprise their roles in the live-action version remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, fans of the franchise have more to look forward to, as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is officially scheduled for release on June 26, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The sequel has added even more star power with Luca Marinelli and Elle Fanning joining the cast.
With multiple projects in development, it's clear that Kojima’s influence continues to expand beyond gaming. While updates on the Metal Gear Solid movie have slowed, the momentum behind Death Stranding suggests the live-action transition could be a major success.
