Disney is secretly developing a Star Wars horror project, according to Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy.
The creative force behind the recent critically-acclaimed addition to the franchise revealed Lucasfilm's behind-the-scenes activities during an interview with Business Insider. When questioned about approaching a darker Star Wars concept, he hinted that Disney already has such a project in development.
"They're doing that. I think they're doing that," Gilroy said regarding the Star Wars horror initiative. "I think that's in the works, yeah."

If confirmed, this development would mark Star Wars' first true exploration into horror territory on screen. The nature of the project remains entirely mysterious - it could emerge as a television series, film, or completely different format. Currently no creative leads have been announced, and fans might need to wait years for concrete details about Lucasfilm's horror venture, though Gilroy's remarks confirm the concept is under consideration at Disney.
"The right creator, the right moment, and the right vibe...you can do anything," Gilroy added, reflecting on his Andor experience. "My hope is that our show succeeds, allowing us to pay forward the opportunity we received from 'The Mandalorian' and support other creators pursuing innovative projects."
A full-fledged Star Wars horror film has been a long-standing fan desire - even Mark Hamill has expressed interest. While the franchise has extensively explored the Skywalker saga and its surrounding characters, numerous dark corners of the universe remain unexplored. While some spinoffs have included frightening elements, major productions typically maintain broad appeal across age groups.
Andor stands out as a mature, critically-praised exception within the Star Wars universe. Its first season made significant waves in 2022 and remains highly regarded (we awarded it 9/10 in our review).
Gilroy and his team will end the wait for more content when Andor Season 2 premieres its first three episodes on April 22.
