The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a feature that fans have been eagerly awaiting for over a decade: the addition of subclasses to the game. This update promises to enhance gameplay and flexibility, allowing players to explore new combinations and strategies. Dive in to discover how this works and what future updates hold for ESO.
Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates
Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines
As part of ESO's 10th Anniversary celebration, Zenimax Online Studios unveiled exciting plans during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. The long-awaited subclass system is finally coming to the game, answering years of player requests for more flexibility in class selection.
Previously, players had to create new characters to experience new skill trees, a cumbersome process in an MMO. Now, with the introduction of subclasses, players can mix and match skill lines without the need to start over. Once a player reaches level 50, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others with any of the six additional classes. This update opens up over 3000 unique combinations, enabling players to tailor their playstyle more precisely.
ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new system, noting that extensive testing has been conducted. Despite potential increases in Power Levels, Lambert stated, "We are fine with where it is," indicating a balanced approach to the game's dynamics.
Seasons of the Worm Cult
Zenimax Online Studios is also shifting to a seasonal content model, as announced by Studio Director Matt Firor. This change aims to allow for more experimental releases and quicker responses to player feedback. Firor emphasized the desire to blend storytelling with innovative gameplay systems, saying, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do, but we'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."
The first seasonal content, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," marks a significant return to the game's original Molag Bal storyline after a decade. Players will explore the new Isle of Solstice zone, investigating the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath noted that while this season will span most of the year, future seasons are planned to last between three to six months. Zenimax also plans to revisit past storylines with "remix" seasons, teasing a future Dark Brotherhood-themed season.
