EXCLUSIVE: Stephen King Confirms He's Writing for Mike Flanagan's Dark Tower Adaptation: 'It's Happening' - IGN Fan Fest 2025

Mike Flanagan's upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower promises unparalleled faithfulness to the source material. This commitment is further solidified by the exciting news that King himself is actively contributing new material to the project.

IGN exclusively revealed King's involvement, stating that he is currently writing for the adaptation. While he remained tight-lipped about specifics, his confirmation assures fans of a deeply authentic Dark Tower experience. This echoes his previous contribution of an epilogue to the 2020 Paramount+ adaptation of The Stand. However, the sheer scope of The Dark Tower, encompassing much of King's vast fictional universe, suggests even greater potential for enriching the existing narrative.

Given Flanagan's past successes bringing King's works to life (e.g., Doctor Sleep, Gerald's Game), and his stated intention to remain true to the books, this collaboration promises a respectful and immersive adaptation. In a 2022 interview with IGN, Flanagan emphasized his commitment to avoiding deviations, stating that the adaptation "would look like the books" and explicitly rejecting comparisons to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

He further emphasized the inherent power of the original story: "It is what it is, what it is is perfect. It's just as exciting as all of those things and just as immersive. It's a story about a tiny group of people, all the odds in the whole world are against them, and they come together. As long as it's that, it'll be fine and there won't be a dry eye in the house."

This stands in stark contrast to the 2017 film adaptation, which received criticism for its handling of the source material.

While the release date and format of Flanagan's adaptation remain undisclosed, he has several other King projects in the works, including The Life of Chuck (due in May) and a Carrie series for Amazon. The anticipation for his Dark Tower vision, however, is undeniably high.
