Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PC Version: Director Discusses Mods and DLC Possibilities
The director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Naoki Hamaguchi, recently shed light on the PC version's features, addressing the modding community and the potential for future downloadable content (DLC). Read on for details.
DLC: A Fan-Driven Decision
While the development team initially considered adding episodic DLC to the PC release, resource constraints led to a prioritization of completing the trilogy's final installment. In a December 13th interview on the Epic Games blog, Hamaguchi stated, "We did have the desire to add an episodic story as a new DLC...However, given the limited amount of resources, working on and finishing the final game is our highest priority." However, he left the door open: "If we receive strong requests from players...we would like to consider them."
A Message to Modders
Hamaguchi also addressed the modding community, acknowledging the inevitable creation of fan-made modifications. While the game lacks official mod support, he appealed for responsible modding: "We respect the creativity of the modding community and welcome their creations—though we ask modders not to create or install anything offensive or inappropriate."
The potential for creative and beneficial mods is significant, ranging from enhanced visuals to entirely new gameplay elements. However, Hamaguchi's request for responsible content creation is understandable given the potential for misuse.
PC Version Enhancements
The PC version boasts graphical improvements over the original PS5 release, including enhanced lighting and texture resolutions. These updates address previous concerns about character models and aim to leverage the power of higher-end PC hardware. The game launches on Steam and the Epic Games Store January 23, 2025.
Hamaguchi highlighted the challenges of adapting the game's mini-games for PC, citing the need for unique key configurations as a significant hurdle.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second chapter in the Remake trilogy, initially launched on PS5 on February 9, 2024, to widespread acclaim. For more information, check out our other FF7 Rebirth articles.
