Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

by Blake Mar 03,2025

Six years after Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece Hollow Knight, fans are buzzing with speculation. Numerous appearances and disappearances at gaming events, and even a seeming confirmation from Microsoft of a pre-June 2023 release, have left fans yearning for news. The recent lack of announcement at The Game Awards only fueled the anticipation. Could the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally bring the news?

The current excitement stems from a seemingly innocuous image: a chocolate cake. Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake on January 15th, accompanied by the tweet: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

With rumors circulating about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal (which subsequently happened), fans began to connect the dots. Reverse image searching led them to the Bon Appétit recipe for the cake, published on April 2nd, 2024. The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. This sparked a theory: Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the cake tweet.

The speculation doesn't end there. Fans are deciphering Pellen's new Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr (a possible reference to a Silksong NPC, given the 15-character limit mirroring the handle's length), and his new name, "little bomey" (potentially referencing a South Australian wine, given Team Cherry's location).

It's crucial to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. However, six years later, the question remains: has Nintendo secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, or perhaps a timed exclusive? Or is this all simply the fervent speculation of eager fans?

We'll have a definitive answer in a few months. Until then, the mystery of the cake, the cryptic handle, and the potential Silksong reveal continues to captivate the Hollow Knight community.
