Suikoden is making a comeback, sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, slated for free-to-play release. While a release date remains unannounced, a later this year launch is anticipated.
For the uninitiated, the Suikoden series, born in 1995, comprises RPGs developed and published by Konami under the creative direction of Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely inspired by the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the Japanese-titled series has captivated players with its blend of political intrigue, True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven installments, including spin-offs, have graced the gaming world, the last arriving in 2012. Now, rather than a direct sequel or full-scale revival, Konami presents Suikoden STAR LEAP for mobile platforms.
What Awaits?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast, yet retains the series' signature gathering of 108 heroes. The game employs pixel art to preserve the classic Suikoden aesthetic. See for yourself:
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes shaping the world. The protagonist, Hou, son of the village chief, experiences a life-altering event following his first successful hunt – a devastating village attack. This compels Hou, alongside Hisui (his servant with a mysterious emotional repression), Shirin (his childhood friend, driven by justice), and Shapur (a former general turned butler), to embark on a peace-restoring quest.
Mixed reactions from the community are expected. Long-time Suikoden fans, yearning for a proper series continuation, might find Konami's gacha-style STAR LEAP a less-than-ideal offering.
Further details will emerge upon the game's release. For the latest updates, visit the official website.
