Tantalus Media, the studio behind acclaimed Nintendo remasters like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Skyward Sword HD, is revealed as the developer of the upcoming Luigi's Mansion 2 HD for Nintendo Switch. The original Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, released on the 3DS in 2013, saw Luigi battling ghosts across Evershade Valley to recover the fragments of the Dark Moon and defeat King Boo.
Nintendo announced the Switch remake last September during a Nintendo Direct, confirming the June 27th release date this past March. Following a new trailer showcasing the game's story, the file size was revealed. While the launch is imminent, the developer remained a secret until recently.
Gaming news outlet VGC reported that Tantalus Media is credited in Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, taking the reins from the original developer, Next Level Games. Tantalus Media's portfolio also includes the Nintendo Switch port of Sonic Mania, the PC port of House of the Dead, and contributions to the Age of Empires 1-3: Definitive Editions.
Zelda Remaster Studio Tantalus Media Unveiled as Luigi's Mansion 2 HD Developer
Early reviews for Luigi's Mansion 2 HD are positive, praising it as another successful Nintendo remaster, similar to Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. However, the game has encountered pre-order issues mirroring those faced by Paper Mario, with Walmart cancelling orders.
Despite these setbacks, Tantalus Media's involvement is now confirmed, a pattern mirroring Nintendo's late reveal of Super Mario RPG's developer, ArtePiazza, shortly before its release. The developer of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Minions remains undisclosed, suggesting a similar pattern for future Nintendo releases.
