If you're a fan of Marvel Rivals, you've likely heard the buzz surrounding the discovery of hidden character names buried deep within the game's code. Dataminers have been hard at work uncovering these potential future heroes, and while some were quickly confirmed—like the Fantastic Four—rumors began swirling about the authenticity of others. Could these names be nothing more than cleverly planted distractions by the developers?
To settle the debate, we reached out to Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu and Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo. While they assured us there are no elaborate pranks underway, they emphasized taking these findings with a grain of salt. Wu explained that leftover information in the game’s code doesn’t necessarily reflect upcoming additions. Instead, it might simply indicate early explorations during the character design process. Koo chimed in, saying, "We’d rather spend our time developing the actual game."
When asked how characters are selected, Wu revealed that NetEase plans updates about a year in advance, aiming to introduce a new character every month and a half. Their approach focuses on balancing the roster by introducing fresh skills and playstyles, rather than over-tweaking existing ones. Once a list of candidates is drawn up, Marvel Games weighs in, considering both community interest and upcoming Marvel events like films or comics. This explains why the code might contain numerous names—it reflects the brainstorming phase of their creative process.
Currently, Marvel Rivals continues to impress, with recent additions like the Human Torch and The Thing set to join the game on February 21. As for a potential Nintendo Switch 2 release, stay tuned for more details.
