Marvel Snap got caught up in the TikTok ban; so what does this mean for us?

by Harper Feb 21,2025

TikTok's weekend ban dominated headlines, but the fallout extended beyond the social media giant. Several top-tier releases, including Marvel Snap, were also pulled from US app stores. This seemingly haphazard move by ByteDance leaves developer Second Dinner scrambling, highlighting the potential risks of aligning with a company embroiled in geopolitical conflict.

The TikTok ban, anticipated due to a congressional act labeling it a foreign adversary, briefly took effect Sunday. However, President-elect Trump's swift intervention and ByteDance's quick action restored the app. This wasn't the case for other ByteDance subsidiaries, though.

Marvel Snap, a popular card game, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, both suffered US service interruptions. ByteDance's ultimatum – accept all or nothing – left Second Dinner, the Marvel Snap developer, blindsided. They've since pledged in-game compensation to players, but the incident raises serious concerns.

ByteDance's move with TikTok appears calculated to generate publicity, ultimately succeeding in its dramatic return to the US market. However, this political maneuver inadvertently ensnared other gaming titles, leaving developers like Second Dinner to manage the fallout. While Second Dinner likely won't sever ties with ByteDance, this incident likely eroded trust. The message is clear: social media trumps mobile gaming in ByteDance's priorities.

This isn't ByteDance's first misstep in the gaming sector. In 2023, significant layoffs and project cancellations within their gaming division signaled a shift towards partnerships rather than internal development. However, this recent betrayal of trust could severely damage future partnerships, making other developers hesitant to collaborate. Disney, with the recent success of NetEase's Marvel Rivals, might also be reconsidering its involvement.

The impact extends beyond ByteDance. Tencent, NetEase, and other Chinese gaming companies could face similar scrutiny. The FTC's actions against MiHoYo regarding loot boxes further illustrate the growing pressure on the industry. The Marvel Snap situation serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the vulnerability of gaming to political agendas.

The unexpected backlash against TikTok's ban, particularly from those initially unconcerned, demonstrates the potential consequences of such actions. ByteDance's gamble, while successful, sets a worrying precedent. The future of gaming hinges on whether political maneuvering will continue to dictate the availability of beloved titles. The risk of jeopardizing consumer enjoyment for political gain is a dangerous game.
