Amazon Cancelling Metroid Prime 4: Beyond’s Pre-Orders
Reservation Charge will be Refunded
On January 11, 2025, reports surfaced on Reddit, Resetera, and various online forums that Amazon was canceling pre-orders for Metroid Prime 4. Screenshots shared by affected users revealed that Amazon cited "a lack of availability" as the reason for these cancellations. Despite this setback, Amazon promised to refund the reservation charge within 1-2 business days, offering some solace to disappointed fans.
The news has been particularly disheartening for long-time Metroid enthusiasts who pre-ordered the game back when it was first announced at E3 2017. However, the cancellation of pre-orders does not signal the game's cancellation; it simply means that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is currently not available for pre-order on Amazon. Metroid Prime 4’s Development History
Metroid Prime 4 was unveiled at E3 2017, with Nintendo America's director of product marketing clarifying that Retro Studios, the developer behind previous Metroid titles, would not be involved in this project. The identity of the developer working on the game remained undisclosed at that time.
Two years later, on January 25, 2019, Nintendo announced a significant shift in the game's development, bringing Retro Studios back into the fold. In a YouTube video, senior managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi explained that "the current development progress has not reached the standards we seek in a sequel to the Metroid Prime series."
Fast forward to June 2024, and Nintendo showcased a full gameplay trailer for Metroid Prime 4 during its Nintendo Direct, confirming the game's title as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and setting a 2025 release window. The trailer also introduced the game's antagonist, Sylux, leading a group of Space Pirates in an unnamed facility.
Nintendo reiterated the 2025 release window in a news post dated January 3, 2025, reassuring fans that despite Amazon's pre-order cancellations, the game is still on track for release this year. As the Switch 2's announcement looms on the horizon, it remains to be seen whether Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will launch on the original Switch or its successor.
