James Gunn's upcoming Superman film is set to introduce a fresh take on the iconic hero, and it's bringing Nathan Fillion's unique portrayal of Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, into the spotlight. In a recent interview with TV Guide, Fillion shared insights into his version of the character, which he describes as quite different from previous iterations seen on film and television. "He's a jerk!" Fillion exclaimed, emphasizing that being a Green Lantern doesn't require goodness, just fearlessness. "So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He's not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that's the answer. That's what you do in that moment."
Fillion also touched on Gardner's superhero alter ego, highlighting a trait of overconfidence. "I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman," the actor noted. "He can't!" This blend of fearlessness and hubris promises to bring a dynamic and unpredictable character to the screen.
The new Superman film marks the first entry in a rebooted DC Cinematic Universe, kicking off the chapter titled "Gods and Monsters." While the film focuses on Superman, the broader DC universe continues to expand, with HBO currently producing a series called "Lanterns," set to explore other members of the Green Lantern Corps. This series, slated for a 2026 release, will feature Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.
In Gunn's Superman, David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film, written and directed by James Gunn, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
