Nintendo has addressed concerns regarding the compatibility of its newly released GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2, acknowledging potential "issues" when using it for modern games. The controller was introduced during a 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, with fine print indicating its compatibility solely with the Nintendo Switch Online retro library of GameCube games.
Nintendo has since clarified that the GameCube controller is primarily designed for use with GameCube titles within the Nintendo Switch Online service. While players *might* be able to use the controller for other Nintendo Switch 2 games, they should be aware that there could be "some issues" due to the absence of certain buttons and features found in more contemporary controllers.
In a statement provided to Nintendo Life, Nintendo emphasized that "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games." They further noted, "Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."

The GameCube collection significantly enhances the Nintendo Switch Online library, offering subscribers access to a variety of classic titles from the 2000s, including fan-favorites like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, all available at the service's launch this summer. Nintendo has also teased future additions to the library, such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, promising an expanding catalog of retro gaming experiences.
