If you’re a fan of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll want to pay attention to its built-in GameChat feature. Integrated directly into the console, this video and voice chat system is designed to be a standout feature for users looking to connect with friends while gaming. However, before you dive in, it’s important to note that setting up GameChat requires a bit more than just signing in—it involves verifying your identity with a phone number.
When activating GameChat, you’ll need to provide Nintendo with either your existing phone number linked to your Nintendo Account or a new one for verification purposes. Once you’ve entered the details, Nintendo will send a text message to confirm your identity. This ensures that your GameChat activities are tied securely to your account. Keep in mind, though, that if you’re under 16 years old, parental approval via the Parental Controls app is necessary, and a phone number will still be required for verification.
According to Nintendo’s website, every user with a Nintendo Account will need to go through this process, even if multiple users share the same Switch 2 console. IGN reached out to Nintendo for further clarification on this policy.
Accessing GameChat is simple—just press the new ‘C’ button on your controller during gameplay. This opens up the ability to video chat with up to four people or join an audio call with up to 24 participants. For those who enjoy showing off their gameplay or sharing moments with others, the feature supports streaming your current game along with using a compatible camera peripheral (sold separately) to broadcast yourself.
This marks a significant shift for Nintendo, historically known for its family-friendly approach to gaming. With GameChat, Nintendo is finally catching up with competitors by offering robust online communication tools.
It’s worth noting that GameChat will be free for the first ten months following the Switch 2’s release on June 5. After March 31, 2026, users will need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to continue using the feature. Additionally, Digital Foundry recently highlighted concerns among developers regarding the resource demands of GameChat, suggesting it may have an impact on game performance, although specifics remain unconfirmed.
