Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice
Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer a novel functionality: acting as computer mice. While the practicality of this mouse-like mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence originates from Famiboards user LiC, who previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: customs manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at potential mouse functionality in the Switch 2.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were cited. These designations haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they may represent unreleased products. The reported 90 x 90mm size suggests the tape could cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly. The legitimacy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transforming into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement in this mode.
The Legion GO also shares another rumored Switch 2 feature: magnetic rails for controller attachment. This similarity further fuels speculation about potential design parallels between the two devices.
