Octopath Traveler Expansion Moves to NetEase

by Emma Feb 11,2025

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent's operations are transitioning to NetEase in January. This change should be seamless for players, with save data and progress transferring over. While this might suggest Square Enix is scaling back its mobile game efforts, the game itself remains operational.

This news follows the recent announcement of a Final Fantasy XIV mobile version, developed in partnership with Tencent's Lightspeed Studios. This contrasts with the shift of Octopath Traveler to NetEase, raising questions about Square Enix's future mobile strategy.

Square Enix's reduced mobile ambitions might have been foreshadowed by the 2022 closure of Square Enix Montreal, the studio behind successful mobile titles like Hitman GO and Deus Ex GO. Although some games will continue, the shift is unfortunate, especially given the significant player interest in mobile versions of Square Enix IPs, as evidenced by the enthusiasm surrounding the FFXIV mobile port.

While the future of Square Enix's mobile presence remains uncertain, players can explore alternative RPG options in the meantime, such as those featured in our top 25 best Android RPGs list.
