Overwatch 2's 6v6 Playtest Extended, Transitioning to Open Queue
Overwatch 2's popular 6v6 playtest, initially slated to end January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller announced the extension, confirming the mode's availability until mid-season. After that, it will shift to an open queue format, allowing 1-3 heroes per class per team. The possibility of 6v6 becoming a permanent fixture remains a strong contender.
The mode's initial November 2023 return during the Overwatch Classic event showcased its enduring appeal. A subsequent playtest, running from December 17th to January 6th, further solidified its popularity. This second playtest, while omitting some classic hero abilities, quickly became a top-played mode.
Keller's recent Twitter announcement confirmed the extension. While the exact end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade. Until mid-season, it will retain its current format. The subsequent transition to open queue will maintain a balanced team composition, requiring each team to field a minimum of one and a maximum of three heroes from each class.
The Argument for Permanent 6v6 in Overwatch 2
The continued success of 6v6 isn't surprising. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, the return of 6v6 has been a consistently top player request. The shift to 5v5 was a significant change from the original Overwatch, impacting gameplay in ways that resonate differently with various players.
Hope remains high for 6v6's permanent return, potentially even inclusion in competitive playlists. This possibility hinges on the successful completion of the ongoing playtests.
