Path of Exile 1 Update Delayed Indefinitely Due to Path of Exile 2 Issues
Grinding Gear Games (GGG) has issued an apology to Path of Exile (PoE) 1 players for the indefinite delay of the 3.26 update. The update, initially slated for late October 2024 and then mid-February 2025, has been postponed due to the unexpected challenges encountered during the launch of Path of Exile 2.
GGG had previously committed to continued support for PoE 1, even after the release of PoE 2. However, the PoE 1 team was reassigned to assist with PoE 2's endgame development before its December launch. While GGG initially believed they could return to PoE 1's 3.26 update in time for its February target, this proved unrealistic.
In a video message, Jonathan Rogers, PoE 2 game director and GGG co-founder, explained that PoE 2's launch faced numerous issues, including crashes and balance problems requiring immediate attention. He admitted that the decision to divert the PoE 1 team was a miscalculation, stating, "We were fooling ourselves." The delay of PoE 2 itself, coupled with its post-launch problems, necessitated the continued focus on resolving those issues.
Rogers expressed regret for the situation, acknowledging that the studio underestimated the complexities of simultaneously managing two games. He stated that a plan is in place for the eventual release of PoE 1's 3.26 update, but a release date cannot yet be provided. PoE 2 is currently at version 0.1.1, with the 0.2.0 update expected to mark a turning point.
Despite the setbacks, PoE 2's early access launch on December 6th, 2024, across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, was a resounding success, becoming one of Steam's most played games.
