PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the victor. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising entry.
HB Studios, the developer, boasts a decade of golf game experience, evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an exhaustive roster of real-world courses (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, such as occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overlooked.
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. The right stick control scheme, allowing for nuanced shot shaping, is particularly satisfying. Difficulty levels cater to both casual and hardcore players, with options ranging from forgiving "Perfect Swing" to a more challenging, realistic experience. Lateral movement in the tee box adds a strategic layer. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, enhanced the experience.
MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative elements, allowing players to choose a heroic or villainous path, impacting stat boosts. Earned VC unlocks gear that further influences stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. The addition of weekly refreshable Quests adds replayability.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, offers sufficient customization. Skill trees add depth. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social gameplay, echoing the fun of classic golf games like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with varying time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent competence rather than groundbreaking innovation. This makes it less sensational, but ultimately a safe bet for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
