Sony Announces PSN Account Optionality for Select PC Game Ports
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant change to its PC port strategy, making PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts optional for several PlayStation 5 titles released on PC. This shift, effective after the January 30, 2025 launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC, addresses previous player concerns regarding mandatory PSN account linking.
Games Affected:
The change impacts several high-profile titles, including:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered (April 2025 release)
However, it's important to note that other PC ports, such as Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Until Dawn, will continue to require PSN accounts.
Incentives for PSN Account Holders:
While PSN accounts are no longer mandatory, Sony is incentivizing players to link their accounts by offering exclusive in-game bonuses and features:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early unlock of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP).
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points, and Ellie skin (Jordan’s Jacket).
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony has indicated that further incentives may be added in the future. Additionally, standard PSN benefits like trophy support and friend management will remain available for logged-in users.
Addressing Past Backlash:
This policy change follows significant player backlash in 2024, particularly concerning the mandatory PSN account requirement for Helldivers 2 and God of War Ragnarök on PC. The Helldivers 2 situation resulted in the game's delisting in numerous countries lacking PSN support. This highlights the challenges of a globally-integrated PSN system and the importance of considering regional accessibility for PC players.
The move towards optional PSN accounts represents a notable shift in Sony's approach to PC gaming, potentially indicating a greater focus on player convenience and accessibility. The company's commitment to providing additional incentives for PSN users suggests a continued effort to balance player choice with the benefits of account integration.
