Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

by Finn Oct 26,2025

The latest Pokémon TCG expansion, *Scarlet & Violet – Destined Rivals*, has officially been revealed, and pre-orders are now live. As excitement builds for the May 30, 2025 launch, fans are eager to dive into what promises to be one of the most memorable sets in recent years. However, the rollout has already been met with familiar frustrations—scalping, website crashes, and order cancellations—casting a shadow over what should be a celebratory release.

Unveiled on March 24, *Destined Rivals* brings back a beloved mechanic: Trainer’s Pokémon cards. Longtime collectors will remember iconic cards like Brock’s Sandslash and Rocket’s Mewtwo, which seamlessly blended fan-favorite Trainers with their signature Pokémon. This nostalgic return adds a unique flavor to deck-building and gameplay, making these cards highly desirable. The set also puts Team Rocket in the spotlight, celebrating the infamous villain team from Pokémon’s original generation. With strong parallels to the popular *Prismatic Evolutions* set earlier this year, *Destined Rivals* is shaping up to be a major hit among players and collectors alike.

When pre-orders launched, demand overwhelmed the Pokémon Center website, leaving many fans stuck in queue or locked out entirely. Almost instantly, scalpers listed the $54.99 Elite Trainer Box (ETB) on platforms like eBay for hundreds of dollars—a common pattern seen with recent high-demand sets such as *Prismatic Evolutions* and the *Blooming Waters 151* collection. The situation has sparked frustration across the community, with collectors expressing disappointment over the growing commercialization of the hobby.

Joe Merrick of Serebii shared his experience after spending hours in a queue only to miss out: "I truly hate this. The way almost all Pokémon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."

Unfortunately, this scenario has become all too common. Despite the Pokémon TCG’s growing popularity, supply struggles to keep up with demand. According to PokéBeach, The Pokémon Company (TPC) has acknowledged the issue in a recent FAQ, confirming that additional inventory of the *Destined Rivals* ETB will be released later in the year. However, some customers have already reported their pre-orders being canceled without warning, further complicating access.

While digital alternatives like *Pokémon TCG Pocket* offer a more accessible entry point, many fans still cherish the physical experience—cracking packs, trading with friends, and playing in local stores. For them, the current scarcity is more than an inconvenience; it’s a barrier to enjoying the game they love. A quick visit to any local card shop reveals empty shelves and high prices, underscoring just how difficult it’s become to participate in the physical TCG scene.

*Destined Rivals* had the potential to be a celebration of nostalgia, strategy, and community. Let’s hope future releases come with better distribution, fairer access, and a renewed focus on the players who make the Pokémon TCG what it is. [ttpp]
