Project Mugen Is Now Called Ananta, Devs Drop New Trailer

NetEase's upcoming urban open-world RPG, formerly known as Project Mugen, has been officially renamed Ananta. First revealed at Gamescom 2023, the game has finally unveiled a new trailer after a long period of silence, promising further details on December 5th. Until then, enjoy the teaser:

The Mystery Behind the Name Change

While the developers haven't commented on the name change, "Ananta" translates to "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of the original "Mugen." This consistency extends to the game's Chinese title. However, the name change has sparked mixed reactions within the gaming community.

Despite the controversy, the game's continued development is a relief. Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. Ananta's stylish trailer, however, lacks gameplay footage, giving Neverness to Everness a potential advantage in the eyes of some players. Personally, Ananta's visuals are more captivating.

A Curious Development

Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all previous social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only their Discord server remains, simply renamed to reflect the title change. This decision to start afresh with new accounts has left many gamers puzzled.

In Ananta, players assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator battling paranormal threats. The cast includes characters such as Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
