Ryan Reynolds is reportedly in the "early stages" of developing a new film that would bring together Deadpool and the X-Men, but with a twist. According to THR, Reynolds envisions this as an ensemble movie where Deadpool would not be the central figure. Instead, he would share the spotlight with three or four other X-Men characters, allowing them to take center stage and be "used in unexpected ways." This project would be distinct from the X-Men film being developed by Michael Lesslie, the writer behind the Hunger Games.
Reynolds is known for nurturing his ideas independently before presenting them to Marvel. The initial concept for what eventually became Deadpool & Wolverine started as a low-budget road trip movie. This new project follows a similar trajectory, and while it's not the first time we've heard of Reynolds working on a Deadpool ensemble movie, it provides fresh insight into the potential adventures of the Merc With a Mouth.
The specific X-Men characters that might join Deadpool remain a mystery, but given Deadpool's history, there's a wide range of possibilities. Past Deadpool films have already featured characters like Wolverine, Colossus, Sabertooth, Pyro, and even Channing Tatum's Gambit, showcasing the character's versatility in teaming up with various members of the X-Men and their adversaries.
