Simu Liu, star of Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is spearheading the adaptation of the popular video game Sleeping Dogs into a feature film. Initial reports suggested Liu was merely advocating for the project, but sources close to the production confirm he's actively involved as a producer and will star as Wei Shen.
This development follows the cancellation of a previous Sleeping Dogs film adaptation announced in 2017, which was to star Donnie Yen. Yen himself recently confirmed the project's demise after years of involvement. Liu's tweet expressing his work on bringing the movie to fruition initially caused confusion, but he later clarified his intentions, including his desire to also contribute to a potential Sleeping Dogs video game sequel.
The Sleeping Dogs film is being developed by Story Kitchen, a company with a proven track record in video game adaptations, including the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and Netflix's Tomb Raider animated series. They are also currently working on adaptations of Streets of Rage and It Takes Two. While a writer and director are attached, and Square Enix holds the rights, a release date and production start date remain unannounced.
This movie represents a significant comeback for Sleeping Dogs, a game whose sequel was canceled in 2013, and whose original developer, United Front Games, closed three years later. Over a decade after the game's release, Sleeping Dogs is finally poised for a cinematic revival.
