The next chapter in the Sonic the Hedgehog saga is slated for a March 2027 release.
Paramount Pictures has officially set a March 19, 2027, premiere date for the fourth installment, as reported by Variety. This announcement comes two years after the release of the previous film, leaving fans with an eager anticipation for the blue hedgehog's return. No plot details or casting information beyond the release date have been revealed at this time.
This sequel is hardly surprising, considering the phenomenal success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film raked in a remarkable $218 million domestically and over $420 million globally, solidifying its position as the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing the initial film's impressive $148 million. This achievement is especially noteworthy given the initial controversy surrounding the character's original design, which underwent significant alterations during post-production.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also holds the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, continuing the iconic rivalry between Nintendo and Sega on the silver screen.
The live-action Sonic franchise continues to expand, boasting three feature films and a Knuckles-centric spin-off streaming series.
Based on Sega's popular video game series, the films follow Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he confronts his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Each film has progressively introduced more iconic characters from the game's universe, including Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with Sonic 3 finally introducing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves).
