Sony is dropping the PlayStation Network (PSN) account requirement for several of its PC games, starting with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launching tomorrow. This means players will no longer need a PSN account to play titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. The impact on other single-player PC ports remains unclear.
However, Sony is incentivizing PSN account linking with in-game bonuses. Connecting your account will unlock perks such as early suits in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and resource bundles in God of War Ragnarök. The Last of Us Part II Remastered offers bonus points and an Ellie skin, while Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered provides a special outfit. Further benefits are planned. These bonuses, along with trophy support and friend management, are highlighted as advantages of linking a PSN account.
The decision follows player feedback regarding the previous PSN requirement, which faced criticism, particularly in regions where PSN isn't readily available. This change addresses concerns raised after similar controversies, such as the short-lived PSN requirement for Helldivers 2 on Steam. While Sony expands its PC presence, this shift suggests a more flexible approach to account linking.
