Sony is reportedly developing a new reboot of the iconic sci-fi franchise, Starship Troopers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, acclaimed director Neill Blomkamp, known for films like District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, has been tapped to write and direct this fresh take on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 military sci-fi novel. Both Deadline and Variety have corroborated this exciting news.
This upcoming Starship Troopers film is set to be a distinct adaptation of Heinlein's original work, produced by Sony's Columbia Pictures. It will not be connected to Paul Verhoeven's 1997 cult classic, which famously satirized the source material. Instead, Blomkamp's project aims to delve directly into the themes and narrative of the novel itself.

The announcement of Blomkamp's involvement comes at an interesting time, as Sony recently unveiled plans for a live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation game, Helldivers. Helldivers, developed by Arrowhead, draws significant inspiration from Verhoeven's Starship Troopers, featuring soldiers fighting for a satirical fascist regime against alien bugs and other foes, all while promoting the concepts of Liberty and Managed Democracy.
With both projects in development, Sony faces the unique challenge of having two films that, while different in approach, share thematic elements. The Hollywood Reporter emphasizes that Blomkamp's Starship Troopers will not be a remake of Verhoeven's film but a return to Heinlein's original story, which contrasts sharply in tone and message from the 1997 movie.
As of now, neither the new Starship Troopers nor the Helldivers movie has a confirmed release date, suggesting fans may have to wait a while before seeing these projects come to fruition. Blomkamp's most recent directorial effort was Sony's Gran Turismo, an adaptation of the renowned PlayStation driving simulation series.
