1047 Games, the masterminds behind the acclaimed 2019 multiplayer FPS, Splitgate, are thrilled to announce the sequel: Splitgate 2. Dive into the new era of the Sol Splitgate League and discover what's in store.
Splitgate 2 Launches in 2025
Familiar yet Fresh
On July 18, 1047 Games unveiled the cinematic announcement trailer for Splitgate 2, the much-anticipated follow-up to their groundbreaking free-to-play shooter. The original game captured hearts worldwide upon its 2019 debut, and now, the sequel promises to elevate the experience even further.CEO Ian Proulx shared their vision, stating, "Our goal is to craft a game that can endure for a decade or more." While the first game drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the team realized, "To create a lasting modern game, we needed to develop tools for a deep and engaging gameplay loop."
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing at 1047 Games, elaborated, "We’ve reimagined our approach to portals, ensuring that true Portal Gods can shine, while also making sure that players don’t need to constantly portal to achieve victory."
While specifics on Splitgate 2's gameplay remain under wraps, it's confirmed that the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5, remain free-to-play, and introduce a "faction system." While retaining some familiar elements, "Splitgate 2 aims to feel entirely new and fresh compared to its predecessor."
Splitgate 2 is set to launch in 2025 across PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Dubbed "Halo meets Portal," Splitgate is an arena PvP first-person shooter where players can create wormholes to navigate the map swiftly. The original game surged in popularity after founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian released a demo, which saw around 600,000 downloads within the first month. The overwhelming demand led to server shutdowns to expand capacity.
Splitgate spent several years in early access before its official release on September 15, 2022. At that time, the studio announced a halt in updates to focus on "building the game fans truly deserve," hinting at "revolutionary changes" for a new game in the Splitgate universe.
New Characters, Maps, Factions
The trailer introduces the Sol Splitgate League and three unique factions that will deepen the gameplay experience. According to the game’s Steam page, each faction offers a distinct playstyle: with Aeros, you can "dash around the battlefield"; Meridian allows you to "control chaos through tactical time manipulation"; and Sabrask lets you "charge in with raw power."
Though details on how these factions will influence gameplay are scarce, it's confirmed that "Splitgate 2 is not a hero shooter" like Overwatch or Valorant.
While eager fans will have to wait until Gamescom 2024, from August 21 to 25, to see gameplay, the trailer offers a tantalizing glimpse of what to expect. The developers assure that the trailer "accurately represents what players will experience in Splitgate 2," showcasing real maps, weapons, and even the return of dual wielding, a nod to the beloved feature from Halo.
Splitgate 2 Comics
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign, but fans can immerse themselves in the game's lore through a mobile companion app. This app offers comics, character cards, and a quiz to help players determine their ideal faction.
