Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link

by Lucas May 19,2025

Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of their upcoming mobile spin-off, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. After facing multiple delays, including the much-anticipated Android closed beta test, the company has decided to halt development on Missing-Link and shift their focus entirely to the eagerly awaited Kingdom Hearts IV.

Missing-Link was poised to explore a previously unseen chapter in the Kingdom Hearts saga, blending GPS technology with ARPG combat. Players would have wielded the iconic keyblades in their battles against the menacing Heartless, aiming to thwart their world-destroying plans. The innovative use of GPS was a key feature, although the exact mechanics remained somewhat mysterious. Players were expected to be able to explore different global locations remotely, but the complexity of integrating this feature may have led to internal concerns about its feasibility.

Be there or be square - Square Enix's decision to cancel mobile projects has almost become a meme within the gaming community. This trend can partly be attributed to the company's rich but complex catalogue, which, while critically acclaimed, can be challenging for a global audience to navigate. While new mobile releases are generally well-received in Japan, capturing an international audience remains a significant challenge. In the case of Kingdom Hearts, it seems the core concept of Missing-Link proved difficult to execute, prompting Square Enix to redirect their resources towards the next mainline installment, Kingdom Hearts IV.
