A stronghold is an underground catacomb, a relic from ancient times. As you navigate its corridors, you'll discover valuable items, including prison cells, libraries, and other intriguing areas. Most notably, strongholds contain the portal to The End, where you'll face the game's final boss, the Ender Dragon.

To activate the portal, you'll need the Eye of Ender. We'll delve deeper into this item in the next section. Remember, finding a stronghold manually is nearly impossible; the game provides a specific mechanic for locating them, though there are alternative, less conventional methods.

Eye of Ender

The Eye of Ender is the official and intended method for locating strongholds. Craft it using:

  • Blaze Powder (obtained from Blaze Rods, which drop from Blazes)
  • Ender Pearl (primarily from Endermen, though they can also be purchased from priest villagers or found in stronghold chests)

Once crafted, hold the Eye of Ender and use it. It will fly for 3 seconds towards the nearest stronghold. Be cautious, as it's consumable and may either return to you or vanish. Use it wisely, as you'll need about 30 Eyes of Ender in survival mode to fully activate the portal.

The library, constructed from stone blocks, bricks, and bookshelves, is a spacious room with high ceilings and cobwebs that create a mysterious ambiance. Hidden deep within the stronghold, it may contain multiple rooms. Chests near the bookshelves can yield enchanted books and other resources, potentially aiding your future adventures.

Prison

The prison resembles a confusing maze with narrow corridors, bars, and dim lighting. It's populated by skeletons, zombies, and creepers, making it a perilous area to explore. The danger here stems from the lurking mobs rather than the prisoners themselves.

The fountain room is unmistakable, with its central water feature creating a magical atmosphere. The light filtering through cracks in the stone adds a mystical touch, hinting at past rituals or a place of solitude for the stronghold's inhabitants.

Digging into the stronghold's walls can reveal hidden secret rooms, often containing chests with valuable resources, enchanted books, and rare equipment. Be wary of traps, such as hidden arrow mechanisms, and keep your health in check as you navigate these challenges.

Altar

The altar room, initially appearing more like a grim prison than a sacred space, is made of stone bricks marked by time. With torches surrounding the central stone, it evokes an eerie feeling, revealing itself as an ancient altar once your eyes adjust to the dim light.

Stronghold Mobs

The stronghold is guarded by relatively weak enemies, such as skeletons, creepers, and numerous Silverfish, manageable even with basic iron armor. However, the stronghold also houses more formidable foes, adding to the challenge of exploring its depths.

Rewards

Rewards in strongholds are random, meaning your luck can vary greatly. Potential valuable items include:

  • Enchanted book
  • Iron chestplate
  • Iron sword
  • Iron horse armor
  • Gold horse armor
  • Diamond horse armor

The stronghold isn't just a passage to the endgame; it's a rich environment for exploration and combat, making it essential to fully explore and engage with its inhabitants.
