The long-awaited return of Suikoden! After over a decade of absence, the classic JRPG series is poised for a comeback with the upcoming HD remaster of the first two games. This remaster aims to reignite the franchise's popularity and pave the path for future installments.
Remastering Suikoden: A New Generation and Renewed Passion
Introducing Suikoden to a New Audience
The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster is more than just a visual upgrade; it's a revitalization effort. Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama expressed their hopes in a Famitsu interview (translated via Google) that the remaster will not only attract new players but also rekindle the enthusiasm of longtime fans. Ogushi, deeply connected to the series, paid tribute to the late Yoshitaka Murayama, the series creator, stating his belief that Murayama would have wanted to be involved. Sakiyama, director of Suikoden V, emphasized his desire to reintroduce Suikoden to a wider audience, hoping the IP will continue to grow.
A Closer Look at the Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster
Based on the 2006 Japan-exclusive PlayStation Portable collection, the HD remaster brings enhanced visuals to modern platforms. Konami promises enriched HD backgrounds, creating a more immersive experience. While the original pixel art sprites are polished, their core design remains intact. A new Gallery feature includes music, cutscenes, and an event viewer for revisiting cherished moments, all accessible from the main menu.
This remaster also addresses past issues. The infamous shortened Luca Blight cutscene from Suikoden 2's PSP version has been fully restored. Furthermore, some dialogue has been updated to reflect modern sensibilities; for instance, Richmond's smoking habit has been removed to align with Japanese smoking regulations.
Launch and Beyond
Launching March 6, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, the Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster is more than just a nostalgic trip; it's a potential catalyst for the future of this beloved JRPG series.
