The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of unveiling its first major video game, according to CEO Travis Willingham, who hinted that an announcement could come "any day." During an insightful interview with Business Insider, the team shared their expansive plans for the future. While details about the game's title and its specific connections to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham emphasized that the dedicated team is diligently working on the project.
"They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," Willingham explained, giving fans a glimpse into the interactive nature of the upcoming video game spinoff.
Willingham, an actor and one of Critical Role's prominent stars, co-founded the company with other renowned voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and more. Since its launch, Critical Role has evolved into a vast universe of creative content, including the popular Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The forthcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects, though it may not directly tie into them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham disclosed that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, indicating they were nearing the end of a multi-year development journey. It's uncertain whether the game will adapt one of the group's campaigns or introduce an original narrative within the Critical Role world.
Originally, the team anticipated announcing the game before the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we're well into 2025, it seems the announcement is imminent.
"Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels," Willingham remarked to Rolling Stone. "You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
While a release date for the Critical Role video game remains undisclosed, fans can stay excited by exploring the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
