Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends!
Xbox has finally reinstated the much-missed friend request system, ending a ten-year absence and fulfilling a long-standing community plea. This significant update moves away from the "follow" system implemented on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
A Two-Way Street: Control and Intentionality Return
Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton announced the news, emphasizing the return to a two-way, invite-based friendship system. Users can now send, accept, or decline friend requests via the People tab, regaining the control and deliberate connection building that many players missed.
The previous "follow" system, while fostering an open social environment, lacked the clarity and control of friend requests. The distinction between friends and followers was often unclear, leading to confusion.
The "follow" function will remain for one-way connections, allowing users to track content creators or communities without reciprocal engagement. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system.
Privacy and Customization Remain Paramount
Microsoft prioritizes user privacy. New settings will allow users to manage who can send friend requests, who can follow them, and which notifications they receive, all accessible through the Xbox settings menu.
Overwhelmingly Positive Reception
Social media erupted with positive feedback, with users expressing relief and humor at the return of this essential feature. Some players even admitted they hadn't realized the feature was missing!
The Rollout Begins
While a precise release date isn't yet available, Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC are currently testing the feature. A full rollout is expected later this year.
