Gameplay Details:
Tong-its uses a standard 52-card deck (no jokers) for three players. Card values are: Ace (1 point), Jacks, Queens, Kings (10 points each), and other cards at face value.
Objective: Form sets and runs to minimize the value of unmatched cards in your hand at the end of the game.
- Run: Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., ♥4, ♥5, ♥6). Aces are low.
- Set: Three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., ♥7, ♣7, ♦7). A card can only belong to one combination.
Game Flow:
The dealer is determined randomly initially, then by the previous hand's winner. Cards are dealt counter-clockwise (13 to the dealer, 12 to others). The remaining cards form the stock.
Each turn involves:
- Drawing: Take a card from the stock or discard pile (only from the discard pile if you can meld it immediately).
- Melding: Optionally expose sets or runs on the table. At least one meld is required to "open" your hand. A set of four can be melded face down for a bonus.
- Laying Off: Add cards to existing melds (yours or others'). This prevents the other player from drawing on their next turn.
- Discarding: Discard one card face up onto the discard pile.
