James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, is known for frequently casting friends and collaborators in his projects. Now, an actress from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has confirmed ongoing discussions about joining the DC Universe.
The DC Universe (DCU) aims to create a successful shared universe, learning from the missteps of the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU). While the DCEU had some box office successes, it also faced inconsistencies and financial setbacks. Gunn, known for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy films, hopes to steer the DCU towards greater cohesion.
Pom Klementieff, who played Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy, recently reiterated conversations with Gunn about a potential DCU role. At San Antonio's Superhero Comic Con, when asked about a desired DCU character, she playfully evaded a direct answer, confirming only that Gunn has a specific role in mind.
Klementieff also fondly recalled her experience working with Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluding the original team's story, she remains open to reprising her role as Mantis in future projects.
Gunn himself later confirmed these discussions on Threads, clarifying that the role is unrelated to his upcoming Superman film. However, neither Gunn nor Klementieff have revealed details about the character.
Gunn's tendency to cast familiar faces has drawn criticism from some, particularly his use of family members and close associates. However, this practice is not uncommon in filmmaking, and the ultimate success of any casting decision will depend on the actor's performance. Ultimately, Klementieff's suitability for the role remains to be seen.
The Guardians of the Galaxy films are streaming on Disney+.
