Nintendo appears committed to maintaining Mario Kart World's exclusive Mushroom Kingdom theme—meaning fans shouldn't anticipate cameos from Zelda, Splatoon, or Animal Crossing characters making a return.
While Mario Kart 8 featured crossover characters like Link, Zelda, Isabelle, and Inklings, the expanded roster in Mario Kart World noticeably excludes any non-Mario universe faces. Even the longstanding option to race as customizable Mii characters—available since Mario Kart Wii—has been removed.
Nintendo has now clarified this strategic shift regarding external franchises, explaining their intentional decision preserves Mario Kart World's cohesive atmosphere.
"As developers, introducing characters from other franchises would disrupt our vision for this universe," Mario Kart World producer Kosuke Yabuki told Ouest-France. "With the depth of Mario characters available, we didn't feel it necessary."
When specifically asked about incorporating characters from Nintendo's ARMS franchise, Yabuki emphatically stated: "Absolutely not!"
"We carefully consider player expectations regarding character selection," Yabuki added. "But with our extensive roster and costume options, every player will find their perfect match."
This focused approach aligns with Mario Kart World's identity as an open-world Mushroom Kingdom experience—though it marks a notable departure from previous crossover inclusions.

The game's sprawling open world—from Peach's Castle to Bowser's Fortress—creates an authentic Mario road trip experience. This immersive design makes crossover characters feel particularly out of place compared to Mario Kart 8's disconnected track approach.
The absence extends to track environments too. While Mario Kart 8 featured Hyrule-themed courses and homages to F-Zero and Excitebike, Mario Kart World's interconnected world presents different creative constraints.
This strategy reflects Nintendo's broader branding efforts—through Super Nintendo World theme parks and the Super Mario Bros. Movie—to strengthen Mario's distinct identity separate from other franchises.

Nintendo's multimedia projects further demonstrate this separation—the upcoming animated Mario sequel exists independently from their live-action Zelda film adaptation plans.
For fans hoping for Nintendo crossovers, hopes now rest primarily on a potential new Super Smash Bros. installment—though creator Masahiro Sakurai is currently focused on developing a new Kirby game.
