Helldivers 2's "Escalation of Freedom" Update Reignites Player Base
Following a significant update, Helldivers 2 has seen a dramatic resurgence in players on Steam. The update, dubbed "Escalation of Freedom," has nearly doubled the game's concurrent player count.
A Doubled Player Count
Within 24 hours of the update's release, concurrent players jumped from an average of 30,000 to a peak of 62,819. This remarkable increase is attributed to the update's substantial content additions.
The "Escalation of Freedom" update introduced new enemies (Impaler, Rocket Tank), a challenging "Super Helldive" difficulty, expanded outposts with enhanced rewards, new missions and objectives, anti-griefing measures, and various quality-of-life improvements. The launch of the Warbond battle pass on August 8th further fuels player engagement.
Mixed Reception Despite the Surge
Despite the positive player influx, the update has also received negative feedback. Players cite increased difficulty stemming from weapon nerfs and enemy buffs as a source of frustration. Reports of game-breaking bugs and crashes have also surfaced. While the game currently holds a "Mostly Positive" Steam rating, this isn't its first encounter with negative player response.
Previous Player Count Decline
Prior to the update, Helldivers 2 maintained a healthy Steam player base averaging around 30,000 concurrent players. This is considerably lower than its initial peak of 458,709 concurrent players. This decline was largely attributed to Sony's initial requirement to link Steam accounts with PlayStation Network, effectively locking out players from 177 countries lacking PSN access. Although Sony reversed this decision, the access issue remains unresolved for these regions, impacting the game's overall player count. Arrowhead Game Studios' CEO, Johan Pilestedt, has confirmed ongoing efforts to resolve the situation.
