Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s Attention To Detail
The success of KCD2's opening weekend can be largely attributed to Warhorse Studios' meticulous attention to detail, enhancing player immersion and enjoyment. The series is renowned for its commitment to realism, from food spoilage and the need to clean clothes and armor, to sword maintenance. KCD2 builds on this foundation, introducing players to new features that deepen the 15th-century medieval experience.
Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner shared with GamesRadar a new stealth mechanic that affects gameplay. He explained that as players accumulate dirt and grime, they can acquire a debuff. "If you get the debuff that, you know, your body odour, you smell. There's like a circle around you," Bittner said. He added, "Basically, you're broadcasting, like, I'm here."
The game also introduces "handgonnes," an early type of firearm that reflects the era's historical accuracy. Bittner discussed with PC Gamer the challenges of using these early guns, noting their long reload times, inaccuracy, and safety concerns. He admitted, "So we knew it was going to be a meme weapon, but we were cool with it."
KCD2 PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling emphasized their goal of authenticity over hyperaccuracy. "We want to have an intriguing and cool and fun and nice videogame. However, we try extremely hard to make it as authentic as possible. We double check the stuff, so that when the player plays it, or whenever someone checks it, that the things that are listed in there are at least plausible," he stated.
Post-Launch Roadmap
Warhorse Studios has outlined a comprehensive post-launch roadmap to keep players engaged. KCD2 will offer free updates and paid DLC content throughout 2025.
The free updates include the Barber feature, Hardcore mode, and Horse Racing, expected to be released in Spring 2025. Paid DLC content will begin in Summer with "Brushes with Death," followed by "Legacy of the Forge" in Autumn, and "Mysteria Ecclesiae" in Winter.
With its overwhelming opening weekend success, KCD2 is poised to maintain its commercial momentum with these updates and future DLCs, potentially setting new records along the way.
