"Magic: The Gathering Universe Expands into Cinematic Realm"

by Carter May 22,2025

Hasbro has exciting news for fans of Magic: The Gathering: the iconic trading card game is set to expand into a multimedia universe. Partnering with Legendary Entertainment, Hasbro aims to bring the magical world of Magic: The Gathering to screens everywhere through a series of movies and TV shows. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the initial focus will be on developing a feature film, marking the first step in creating a shared Magic: The Gathering universe.

Legendary Entertainment, known for blockbuster hits like Dune and the monster-filled Godzilla vs. Kong, as well as the delightful Detective Pikachu, is spearheading this ambitious project. "We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering," stated Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production, emphasizing their commitment to the game's rich lore and fanbase.

While details are still emerging, it appears that Legendary's film and TV projects may not be connected to the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series set for Netflix. However, it's possible that plans have evolved, and the animated series could now be integrated into this broader shared universe.

Originally created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has captivated players worldwide, evolving into one of the most popular trading card games ever. Wizards of the Coast joined the Hasbro family in 1999, and since then, Hasbro has been actively expanding its intellectual properties into various media.

Hasbro is no novice when it comes to transforming its products into cinematic experiences. From the action-packed G.I. Joe and Transformers series to the fantasy realm of Dungeons and Dragons, Hasbro has a robust lineup of projects in development. This includes new G.I. Joe films, a fresh take on Power Rangers, and even a movie based on the popular spinning top game, Beyblade.
