Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Game Cards to Feature Download Keys

by Stella May 23,2025

Nintendo has announced a significant update for their upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, revealing that the new game cards will sometimes serve as keys for game downloads rather than containing the game itself. In a recent customer support post following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the company outlined how physical game purchases will work once the console launches in June.

The new game-key cards will not hold the actual game data; instead, they will contain a key that prompts a download once inserted into the Switch 2. These cards will be clearly labeled on the front of their packaging, ensuring that customers know what they're buying. This approach is particularly relevant for those who value the traditional plug-and-play experience without the need for downloads or internet connectivity.

While some worry that these cards might replace traditional cartridges entirely, current evidence suggests otherwise. For instance, while certain upcoming titles like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster feature the game-key card disclaimer, others such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not.

It seems that Nintendo may reserve the game-key card approach for larger games that could benefit from this method, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. However, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will ship with a full 64 GB game card on the Switch 2's launch day.

Nintendo also highlighted the enhanced technology in the new red game cards during the Switch 2 Direct, boasting faster data reading speeds than those of the original Switch. This emphasis on improved performance suggests that not all cartridges will be mere key holders. Past examples from the original Switch, like LA Noire and NBA 2K18, required additional downloads despite being on physical media, showcasing Nintendo's flexibility with game card functionality.

As the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 approaches on June 5, 2025, it remains to be seen how many games will utilize game-key cards. For more details on everything announced during today's Direct, click here. To explore the new tech features of the Switch 2, click here.
