In the opening minutes of *Avowed*'s main quest, the Envoy becomes the victim of a tragic assassination. After unraveling the mystery of their own murder with the help of Kai and Marius in Paradis, you'll uncover that the assassin is Ygwulf, a member of the Paradisan Rebels, fiercely opposing Aedyr's presence in the region. As the Emperor's Envoy, you're a prime target for these rebels.
Your journey will lead you to Ygwulf's underground hideout, requiring you to navigate through numerous enemies and engage in some platforming. Make sure to come equipped with ample Health Potions and the best gear available. As you explore the dungeon, you might stumble upon documents that shed light on Ygwulf's true intentions and his remorse. Initially driven by a misguided belief that the Gods commanded him to kill the Envoy, Ygwulf's perspective shifts, and he expresses regret for his actions. Even without these documents, he will confess his remorse when you confront him at the quest's end, ready to face justice.
What Happens If You Spare Ygwulf or He Turns Himself In?
Choosing to have Ygwulf turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote is the least favorable option. If you send him to face the brutal Inquisitor Lödwyn, he will suffer a painful death, yet you won't receive as substantial rewards as you would by sparing him or defeating him in combat. If you decide to spare Ygwulf, he will offer you 625 Copper Skeyt and a bit of Adra as a token of gratitude for your mercy. While this isn't a game-changing amount, it can be helpful. However, sparing him won't alter his fate; he will be killed later in the story regardless.
Why You Should Kill Ygwulf in Avowed
Given Ygwulf's inevitable demise, opting to attack him during your encounter is the most beneficial choice. This leads to a boss fight, providing valuable practice for later encounters in *Avowed*. Defeating Ygwulf also yields the best loot among the three options. Upon defeating him, you can loot his body for currency, Adra, and his unique armor set, Blackwing. Not only does the Blackwing armor look impressive, but it also offers significant stealth advantages, including a +30% damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% movement speed increase when crouching, aiding in sneaking past enemies.
Does Ygwulf’s Fate Affect the Story in Avowed? SPOILER WARNING
Despite Ygwulf's early appearance in the game, his fate subtly influences the ending of *Avowed*. After the final gameplay section, you'll experience art and narration that highlight the impact of your decisions on Eora's world across the Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to unify the Living Lands and foster peace, Ygwulf's death will always occur, radicalizing the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring their continued violent resistance to your efforts post-credits.
