Atari's Infogrames subsidiary has acquired the Surgeon Simulator franchise from tinyBuild Inc., marking a significant step in Infogrames' revival. Infogrames, a label under Atari focused on publishing titles outside Atari's core lineup, is leveraging its legacy as a prominent game developer and distributor from the 80s and 90s. This acquisition aims to expand Infogrames' digital and physical distribution channels, fueling the development of new sequels and collections.
Infogrames' history includes the development of classics like 1992's Alone in the Dark (recently reimagined by Pieces Interactive), as well as publishing titles such as the Backyard Baseball and Putt-Putt series, and Sonic Advance 1 & 2. Following a rebranding under Atari in 2003 and subsequent bankruptcy in 2013, Infogrames, along with other Atari entities, reformed into the modern Atari corporation. This acquisition of Surgeon Simulator follows Atari's recent acquisition of Totally Reliable Delivery Service, further solidifying Infogrames' resurgence.
Geoffroy Châteauvieux, Infogrames Manager, highlighted Surgeon Simulator's enduring popularity and unique appeal, emphasizing the opportunity to expand this timeless franchise.
Atari Acquires Surgeon Simulator
Surgeon Simulator, originally developed by Bossa Studios, follows the hilariously inept surgeon Nigel Burke as he performs increasingly absurd operations on his patient, "Bob." The game's blend of dark humor and unconventional gameplay quickly gained traction.
Initially released on PC and Mac in 2013, Surgeon Simulator expanded to iOS, Android, and PS4 in 2014. A VR version followed in 2016 for PS4 and Windows, with a Nintendo Switch release (Surgeon Simulator CPR) in 2018 featuring co-op and motion controls. Surgeon Simulator 2 launched on PC and Xbox in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The lack of a sequel announcement from Bossa Studios might be attributed to staff reductions in late 2023. tinyBuild, which acquired several Bossa Studios IPs including Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread in 2022, facilitated this acquisition.
