Borderlands 4: Balancing Challenge and Value
Encountering Heightened Challenges
As Borderlands 4 approaches its release, the game's difficulty is also making headlines, with certain points posing a significant challenge. In a Gamescom 2025 interview with Insider Gaming, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford shared his thoughts on how this difficulty shapes the experience for the series' dedicated fans.
Pitchford confessed to feeling "a little nervous" about these tougher segments. He noted that many players in the Borderlands community prefer exploration and character interaction over intensely difficult gameplay.
Despite the increased challenge, Pitchford reassured players that perseverance pays off. He stated, "You'll find that obstacles that seemed tough initially become trivial once you've powered up and mastered the game."
Pitchford Believes Borderlands 4 Could Be Worth $200

While Pitchford has previously engaged in playful banter with fans about pricing, he stands by the game's substantial value, suggesting a $200 price tag could be justified by its content. He remarked, "Honestly, I think they could charge $200. I'd love for it to be free so everyone could play, but the value is there."
His past comments about "real fans" and pricing sparked controversy within the community. However, Pitchford believes that ultimately, the discourse doesn't change the outcome for players.

The CEO elaborated, "When I want something and the price feels fair, I'll buy it. If it doesn't, I won't. All the discussion in the world doesn't alter that basic decision."
He emphasized the hundreds of hours players invest in Borderlands games, which represents incredible entertainment value. Pitchford argued, "When you compare the potential cost to the sheer amount of entertainment provided, it's hard to find a better value proposition anywhere."

Despite lingering reactions to his earlier statements, Pitchford's core point about the game's worth holds strong, supported by its expanded build diversity and status as the largest Borderlands game ever made.
